Tips to Healthy Living
Health and Happiness | May 16, 2010 | ShareDue to change in lifestyle and eating patterns, obesity is indeed a big problem in today’s world. People have such busy work or study schedules that they seldom take the time off to exercise regularly. However, it is because of these stressful patterns of living that the need for exercise and overall fitness is greater now than ever before.
Most people think that exercising means going to the gym or to the swimming pool. In reality, there are many other ways to exercise without taking that extra effort to travel somewhere. Too tired after work to drive to the gym? You can exercise right at home, at your own convenience. Walking or jogging around your neighbourhood, doing stretches and push-ups at home, or even just skipping for fifteen minutes everyday should keep one fit.
Exercise is obviously needed to keep the body fit and prevent health problems like increased heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac problems and so on, but very few people consider the other important benefits of fitness. With the amount of work pressure and other stress factors these days, the stress and anxiety levels of people have gone up considerably. People tend to underestimate the need for mental fitness. Stress can also lead to health problems, especially with the heart. While an activity like yoga combines good physical exercise and mental fitness (as it is an excellent technique for relaxation), there are other methods for people to attain mental fitness separately. It is necessary for people to take time out of their day to simply spend some time with themselves. Meditation is a great way to relax the mind. Some people enjoy indulging in prayer or spiritual activity to help them unwind.
Overall fitness not only includes exercise, it requires a good diet as well. Not only is there plenty of junk food available cheap these days, but people are getting more and more dependent on store-bought foods (like the soups that come in packets). The problem with such foods is that they often contain preservatives, which aren’t healthy. It is certainly convenient to try and avoid the pains of cooking, but even if one can manage to cook just a simple but nutritious meal, it would be far healthier. This is especially true of students, particularly those who live alone. It is easy to just go to the canteen in college and binge on junk food like samosas and oily chips, or to dial for a pizza when one is unsure of what to eat for dinner. Soft drink consumption among the youth these days is also alarming. One would also be surprised to find how many people tend to skip eating breakfast. In a rush to get to school, college or work, people either tend to skip eating in the mornings or quickly gulp down a glass of milk or coffee. Very few people realize that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, first of all because even if you eat a heavy breakfast, you can always lose the calories over the course of the day, and secondly, because the gap between dinner on the previous day and the next meal you eat is entirely too long, causing heat in your stomach.
Unfortunately, a lot of people who realize that there is a problem in there dietary patterns or who want to lose weight tend to skip meals, particularly among young people. It is common for young students to skip eating lunch altogether and just eat a snack.
An individual should eat, on an average, five meals a day; three big ones and two small ones. It should consist of food from all the five food groups- vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and fats (in small quantities). There should never be an excuse for skipping or delaying meals.
Our body needs a good diet and exercise to keep us fit; and fitness is not only needed for to maintain appropriate weight, it is also required for us to live healthier and longer lives.
