Depression Among Youth
Uncategorized | June 9, 2010 | ShareOne of the major concerns of today’s is the youth and its lifestyle. The lifestyle which the so called GEN X is leading seems happy and carefree to one watching from a distance, but on a careful observation, you will see its many cons.
Despite the easygoing and practical nature of the way of living of the youth, they are not free from the depression it causes. They have their share of stress. Most of the times adults don’t understand the kind of stress young people can have. But believe me, they do have loads of issues to take care of, most of which are hidden from their parents.
Exam Results
Depression can range from being as mild as stress or as intense as to forcing the person to commit suicide. Causes of depression are several, first and foremost being exams and results. Students go into depression following their bad performance in exams, unsatisfactory results, or worse, just fear of failure. Generally, the case is that students don’t perform well for themselves; it is just to live up to the expectations of their parents or to prove that they are better than the rest of their peer group. Chances that a student is studying hard for his/her own satisfaction and happiness are very bleak. And when they fail to fulfill what is expected of them, depression ensues. This depression many a times becomes the cause of suicide.
Personal Relationships
Another cause can be stress due to personal relationships. Relationships can be any, family, friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, etc. It would be an understatement to say that all of these form a very important part of a young person’s life. And if any of these relationships are strained, it is a major blow for the person, and depression becomes inevitable. Marital disputes or divorce in parents results in major stress for children as well.
Peer Pressure
Financial problems at home can be another major issue for children to be stressed about. In today’s brand conscious world, it has become almost a necessity for teenagers to be covered in brands from head to toe. And surely this requires hard cash. If the financial situation of the parents doesn’t allow this, and if the peer group they associate with is all brand-obsessed, it could result in some serious depression for the child.
A sure shot way to prevent depression amongst children is to make the parents aware. If the parents are understanding and open with their children, there is no way that children can fall into the trap of depression. That said children too need to understand and move according to the situation at home.
There is no medication for depression. Talk therapy is a method which helps the patient to open up. The only cure for depression is to have a person in your life with whom you can share each and everything, down to the last detail. But till the youth really understands their duty and responsibility in society, maybe they will continue to suffer from depression.
